Established in 2010, World of Wonder provides licensed child-minding services under contract to School District 43 (SD43). In a Reggio Emilia-inspired environment, it supports children age two-and-a half to five years whose parents are enrolled in the SD43 Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) programs at Montgomery and Vanier schools in Coquitlam, British Columbia.
World of Wonder provides a flexible program that recognizes and respects each child’s individuality and developmental stages through opportunities for growth and stimulation in all areas of development including social, intellectual, emotional, and physical.
Under the Reggio Emilia philosophy, through play the child will explore, interact, investigate and experiment through planned experiences in the classroom. It is not about plastic toys and television programs but using natural items to provoke, foster and stimulate the child’s imagination. Our curriculum reflects and is built upon the interests of the children, making their preschool experience fun, exciting and relevant to them and their world.
A goal of World of Wonder is to also help the children understand and learn English so they are prepared for the next stage in their development - the world of Kindergarten and Elementary school. This does not come at the expense of their first language and culture. In fact, at World of Wonder, we embrace the rich culture and heritage of our children and their parents as they transition into their new life in Canada.
Our highly qualified team of Early Childhood Educators work with the parents on any challenges or issues they may be experiencing with their child and provide supports to help their child to improve their motor skills such as cutting and writing. The World of Wonder team also make recommendations to parents about whether or not their child may be ready to enter the next phase of their education journey based on their experiences within our licensed environment. This has proven valuable and supportive for not just the parent, but particularly the child as it is crucial that they be as prepared as possible for their next stage of learning.
World of Wonder also provide clothes, food, and transportation tickets for the children as needed as a volunteer donor service from our staff at our cost and on our time to assist them in overcoming short term challenges that might impact their ability to continue to participate in our child minding program.
World of Wonder is only available to children who parents are enrolled in the SD43 Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) programs at Montgomery and Vanier schools in Coquitlam, British Columbia. To access the LINC program, visit the SD43 website or contact Tina at 604-936-4261.
Our services are provided at no charge through funding under the SD43 Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada (LINC) program.
World of Wonder is closed on all statutory and public school holidays. We are also closed for SD43 professional development days and provincial non-instructional days.
To help children adjust to their new environment, we use a gradual entry approach. This requires the child to attend for one hour daily during the first week, then two hours daily for the second week. The parent must stay with their child in the classroom during the gradual entry process.
We understand that some preschool children are still learning how to use the washroom by themselves and may require help and changing from occasional accidents. However, all children must be potty trained before entering our program because we do not have the facilities or staff required to change children on a regular basis.
We want our parents to feel comfortable with their child's experience at World of Wonder. That is why we encourage feedback, both positive and critical. Parents can share their comments, concerns and ideas by phone, email, or by seeing us in person after class.
